Modern agrifood systems face a dual challenge: ensuring long‑term food security while drastically reducing dependence on fossil resources and mitigating environmental degradation. Fertilizers are central to this challenge. This position paper argues that sustainable food systems cannot be achieved without restoring circular nutrient flows, in which livestock manure and safely managed sewage play a fundamental role. By distinguishing biogenic from fossil carbon, and by recognizing livestock as a cornerstone of the circular bioeconomy, the Union of European Veterinary Hygienists (UEVH) outlines how agriculture, public health, and environmental sustainability can be reconciled through fossil‑free nutrient recycling and a One Health approach.
