The Union of European Veterinary Hygienists (UEVH) has adopted a Position Paper on the public health risk associated with aflatoxins in milk, warning of increased risks linked to climate change, global trade and feed contamination.
Aflatoxins, particularly aflatoxin B1 in feed and its metabolite aflatoxin M1 in milk, are among the most hazardous food contaminants and pose a serious risk to human health. To prevent animal and human exposure to aflatoxins, an integrated and holistic approach is required from production to consumption.
UEVH highlights the need for strengthened monitoring of aflatoxins in feed and milk, improved preventive measures at farm level, and harmonised control systems across Europe, stressing the key role of veterinarians within a One Health framework.
A call to action: UEVH proposes specific measures and urges policymakers, competent authorities and stakeholders to safeguard both animal and public health and to ensure continued consumer confidence in milk and dairy products.
